MANUKAU CLUB'S RACE. CLOSE FINISH PROVIDED. There was a close finish In the 11 miles' road race contested by members of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday. W. T Bray (15s) crossed the lino one length clear of E. J. Blakeaway (15s), who defeated L. Wilson (15s) by lialf-a-length. K. J. Mathieson was only half-a-wheel away fourth. The winner's time waa 32m 7s. Twenty-one started, but a number of the younger riders, finding the wind too strong, retired at the end of the first lap. Blakeaway, with 31m 48s, gained fastest time, while Wilson took only one second longer. Bray, besides winning, gained third fastest time, and Mathieson was next with 32m 44 1-Sa. In addition to a race over 1? miles, a junior race over miles will be decided next Saturday. The junior race is open to riders under 16 years, and will start at two o'clock. Handicaps will be declared on the day. PROFESSIONAL RACE. A professional cycling road race, in which 19 riders took part, was decided over a course of 17 miles at Mangere on Saturday. The results were:—F. Prior (3sm). 1; J. Henderson (3|m). 2: S. Hayes (scr.), 3. The winner's time was 47m 10s. Fastest time was done by Hayes (45m 9s), whose performance was particularly meritorious in view of the weather conditions. A race over a course of 22 miles will be decided next Saturday. Entries will clos» on Wednesday. CONTEST AT TAIHAPE. [BS TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.J TAIHAPE, Saturday. The cycle road race from Taihape to the foot of Mataroa Hill and back by the same route was held to-day. The first three to finish out of the nine starters Sexton, sim, 1; K. Cpton, Gm, 2; C. Ericson, scr, 3. Time, 32m 455. The prize for the first boy under the age of 16 years, outside the placed men, was won by C. Benfell. The fastest time waa registered by the scratch man. C. Ericaon, who took 27m 15s. beating his previous time by 455.
