LADIES' GOLF TOURNEY.

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP, PLAY IN QUALIFYING ROUND. ■BEST CARD BY MISS PAYTON". In dull but fine weather the Auckland provincial ladies' golf championship tournament was opened yesterday at Middlemorel The course was in fine order. Exceptional interest has been aroused in the fixture and in comparison wth 24 entries last year, there were 48 competitors in the qualifying round of the championship and 20 additional entrants for the medal handicap played in conjunction. Misses M. Pavton and E. Gulling, both repeated their performances of last year at Titirangi, in securing first and second places respectively on the qualifying list. Miss Culling was runner-up in last year's championship to Miss 0. Kav, of Whattgarei, who now resides in the South Island, and is not defending her title. The failure of Mrs. Slack, of Cambirdge, and Misses E. M. Upton and M. Cooper to qualify caused surprise. The scoring was generally close, particularly in the tussle for the last three places for which five competitors were e^ual. In conjunction with the qualifying round of the championship senior and junior medal handicap-- were played. Miss N. In the afternoon a Canadian foursomes match attracted a good entry and resulted in the return of the following cards:—Mrs. Bradley and Mrs. Finn, 101 —30—71; Miss F. Rathbone and Miss S. Martin. 95—21—74; Mrs. Hughes and Miss F. Ruddock, 102—23—79; Miss E, Gill and Mrs. H. Foster, 104—24—78: Miss C. Ba.ylv and Mrs. Grant, 102—24 78;, Mrs. P.'Hanna and Miss K. Clavk, 105—26—79. A putting competition was won by Miss G. Easton. To-day's Programme. The first round of championship match play will take place this morning. the draw being iis follows:—Miss M. Payton v. Mrs. Banister, Mrs. Grace v. Miss T. Bayly, Mrs. Dufaur v. Miss D Horton, Mrs. Hodges v. Mrs. Towle, Miss S. Payton v. Miss H. Laurenson, Miss G. Buddie v. Mrs. Deighton, Mrs Gardner v. Miss B. McGovern, Miss E. Culling v. Miss M. Rid : ings. A handicap bogey competition will be played in conjunction with this round. In the afternoon the second round of the championship and an approaching and putting competition will be played. Play will commence at 9.30. A prize will bo given for the best aggregate of three putting cards instead of for the best card of the meeting. PUPUKE V. GLENDOWIE. A teams match between members of the Pupuke and Glendowie Golf Clubs will be flayed at »he Pupuke links on Saturday, n the following details of the draw Glendowie players are mentioned first:—F.
