CANTERBURY FIRES.
COMPENSATION FOR LOSS.
GOVERNMENT HELPING FARMERS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —FRKSS ASSOCIATION.] ASHBUETON. Friday. The sufferers by the destructive grass fires in the Chcrtsey district on January 29 are to receive compensation from the Government, states Air. James Gow, who acted as the settlers' assessor with Mr. Lush, of the Railway Department. . Tho Government disclaims all responsibility for the origin of the fire, which, it was alleged, was started by sparks from locomotives, and the compensation is in the nature of a compassionate allowance. No definite amount is named.
