AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.
" DRIVE " FOR MEMBERSHIP. GOOD WORK BY PRESIDENT. Chiefly by the personal efforts of its president, Mr. H E. Vaile, the Auckland Institute has gained 27 new life members and 79 new ordinary members in the past four weeks. Mr. Vaile, who had been: responsible for enrolling all but eight of the number, was heartily congratulated by the council of the institute at its monthly meeting yesterday. Mr. A. G. Lunn said the president had done simply wonderful work. He had attempted the same sort of thing, and he knew what uncongenial work it was. He moved that a vote of appreciation be accorded to Mr. Vaile, and that it be recorded on the minutes. The motion was carried unanimously. "I agree with Mr. Lunn that it is a hateful job," said Mr. Vaile in thanking the council, "but it was a matter of duty. We can do nothing without enthusiasm. The institute is just like a business, it must eithei go forward or-back-ward. It is the only society affiliated to the New Zealann Institute that has the ver\ heavy responsibility of maintaining a museum" Instead of 550 members it should have 1000. There must be at least 20,00<D people in the community who could well afford membership, and one in 20 of them would be none too much, consideiing "the object' of the institute and the extremely altruistic work that it does. It would be a very good thing if we could reach such a number, and I hope the members of the council flill work to that etui."
