CO-OPERATIVE MARKETING.
Sir, —"Soldier Settler" in my judgement has made a very sound case against tho present system of marketing' meat in the province and town of Auckland. The discrepancy between what the producer receives and what the consumer pays is in urgent need of investigation. When one considers the vicissitudes of stock from the time it leaves the pasture until it reaches the consumer, the marvel is that there is anything left of the animals at all. A proper scientific calculation of waste from this cause alone would be interesting. " Soldier Settlor's " letter should have the earnest consideration of the producers. who have the key to the situation. With a little organisation and at very little cost the scheme is quite practicable, and could bo put into operatiorl almost immediately. Under the present system, the stockraisers and those who buy meat are being exploited, while others get tho profits. " Beef-eater.
Sir, —I was amused at " Soldier Settler's " letter in Friday's Herald. He says that he is a practical farmer. lie certainly knows absolutely nothing of the meat market, price of stock, hides, etc. My advice to him, before he writes up tho meat market again, is to get a little reliable information from some ono who understands the business, and not write such arrant nonsense.
