FLAG OF THE SOVIET.
AN UNFURLING INCIDENT. SHAKESPEARIAN CELEBRATION. LONDON, April 04. The utmost precautions were taken to prevent a disturbance at the unfurling of the Soviet flag among the flags of 62 nations at the Shakespeare birthday cele-bratioi-s at Stratford-on-Avon, yesterday. Policemen %vere stationed near the Soviet flag, which was not labelled like the others. Shouts of "Shame!" greeted Madame Maisky, wife of a councillor of the Soviet Legation in London, as she pulled a cord, revealing a hammer and a sickle on a red ground. A policeman guarded the flag throughout the day. The Empire Shakespeare Society celebrated the poet's birthday by a production of "The Merchant of Venice" , m modern costume.
