AVONDALE AFFAIRS.
WORKS IN THE BOROUGH. The Avondale Borough Council met on Wednesday, the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Tait, presiding. The new member of Parliament for the district, Mr. H. G. R, Mason, discussed local requirements with the council. The Mayor drew Mr. Mason's attention to a dangerous fence at. the railway station which prevented a view of the traffic passing over the overhead bridge. The council had repeatedly endeavoured to get the Railway Department to authorise its removal, hut without avail. Mr. Mason agreed to inspect the locality. It was decided to prepare a list of properties which it was considered were overvalued and submit the cases to the department for reconsideration. Mr. 11. A. Darrow drew attention to the inadequate postal facilities in Avondale. He stated that a letter posted in Avondale at 5 p.m. was not delivered in the city until the following day. It was desided to draw the chief postmaster's attention to the matter. A petition was received from residents of Oakley Avenue praying to be included in the drainage reticulation area. It was decided to deal with the matter at a special meeting on Monday next. The building inspector reported that during the previous fortnight 12 permits had been granted of an estimated cost of £2152. There were 16 houses in course of erection. It was decided to extend the water service down Seaview Road with 4in. mains, cutting out a portion already laid with 2in. pipe. The engineer was instructed that in future all mains laid should he of 4in. rapacity so as to he able to cope with fires.
