MILITARY TRAINING.
THE CAMPS AT HOPUHOPU. GOOD WORK OF MOUNTED RIFLES [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAMILTON. Thursday. Keen interest in military training was taken by the mounted men, members < f the. 4th' (Waikato) N.Z.M.R., who went into camp at Hopuhopu last week. I'or various reasons the men have not had an opportunity of training together before, and after last week's experience the opinion was generally expressed that training for a week as a unit was infinitely preferable to monthly half-day parades in small sections. Referring to the week's work, a staff officer stated that the men displayed remark: iblc enthusiasm. They all found their own horses. Some of them rode in over 40 miles to attend the camp. One man found that his horse was not- satisfactory. Obtaining leave he returned home'one night, 15 miles away, and came back early the next morning with a better mount. The conduct 4 of the men throughout the week was excellent. An effort is being made to bring the unit up to its full strength of 300 and to equip it with two additional machine gun sections, with headquarters at Hamilton. ~ Some'26o men, details who have missed previous camps End have not otheiwisecompleted their year's training, went into camp at Hopuhopu on Monday.- Major W • C Finnis, N.Z.S.C.. is camp commandant The' weather has been exceedingly unfavourable until to-day, and considerable difficulty was experienced in keeping the tents in'an upright position. Better weather is now prevailing.
