SALE OF A PICTURE.
PROFIT OF £12,300. FIRST BOUGHT FOR £2OO. LONDON. April 26. How a portrait of an old lady brought £2OO, and was resold for £12.500, when it was found that it was painted by Franz Hals, was told in M.r. Justice McCardie's Court, when Frederick Salaman, a trustee in bankruptcy on behalf of Dr. Tait, practising in the West End, claimed half the profits of the sale, or damages for alleged fraud, from Nicholas Van Slochem, an antique dealer. Salaman's counsel said that Van Slochem agreed to buy and resell the picture, sharing the profits with Tait. Later he said the picture was not worth buying. Nevertheless, he purchased it and resold it- for £12,500. ' Reginald Smith, an art dealer, told the Judge that he would have wanted £20,000 for the picture if he had known it was by Franz, Hals. He had been bitten once when he bought a Rembrandt for 12s. He had sold it for £3OOO, but subsequently it was resold for £45,000. Defendant agreed to a verdict for £3OOO.
