AMERICAN SILVER ISLAND.
A STEADY FLOW OF ORE. [from our own correspondent.] SAN FRANCISCO, April 7. Discovered by accident, what is claimed to be a veritable treasure trove of silver ore is being unearthed on Catalina Island, off the mainland in the Pacific, west of Los Angeles. Nearly £IOO.OOO worth of rich ore has been taken from Mount Black Jack alone in recent months, and the island is yielding a steady flow of silver at the rate of twice that amount annually, according to, a statement made by the president of the Catalina Island Company. The resources of the island, purchased as a pleasure resort six years ago by Mr. William Wrigley, junior, Chicago, chewing gum magnate, have boen barely tapped. An extra force of diggers arrived last week to assist in developing recent "strikes," and tho silver ore is being tunnelled out daily for shipment to the smelter at Shelby in San Francisco Bay. " The island is loaded from stem to stern with silver and other ores," declared the company official. " Twentyfour veins have been uncovered since the initial discovery at Black Jack two years ago." The silver ore assays from £2O to £6O per ton. Operations are being extended.
