PUMPS ON KERBSIDE.

WELLINGTON'S DECISION.

CONDITIONS LAID DOWN.

A RENTAL OF £SO YEARLY.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Thursday.

The controversy in respect to the erection of kerbsido petrol pumps, which have lately become popular through the increased distribution of petrol in bulk, was revived at the City Council meeting tonight when the Works Committee asked tho council's approval of certain conditions when application is made for pumps. The conditions are that tho installations shall be 35ft. from tho building line of tho street intersection. There shall be a minimum of 18ft. from the kerb to any tramline and a clearance for fireplugs, etc. No pump can be placed on footways less than Bft. wide. An annual rental of £SO shall ho charged. Tho report was adopted. Mr. Semple gave notice of his intention to move further restrictions. DESIRED AT HAMILTON. DECISION OF MOTORISTS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] HAMILTON. Thursday. The construction of kerbsido petrol pumps on footpaths in Hamilton was discussed by tho Hamilton Automobilo Association. Tho secretary, Mr. J. Gilbert, considered' the kerbsido pump a public utility. If they were objected to and not allowed it would kill the small trader. Tho question was one that affected the motorist as well as tho trade. The driving in and out of garages, across footpaths, to obtain petrol added to the possibility of accidents. Ho could see nothing that should prevent pumps being allowed in Hamilton. Possibly it would be advisable to forbid them between Hood and London Streets in the main thoroughfare. It was considered by Mr. H. Toombs that the erection of kerbsido pumps would lessen congestion of traffic. There would be a considerable saving of tinio in using them. Dr. Waddell remarked that with certain restrictions tho kerbsido pump, in his opinion, was a great public utility. The meeting unanimously decided to support having pumps on the kerbs.
