OBITUARY.
DR. J. LAURENCE RENTOUL.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Rood. 11.5 P.m.) MELBOURNE. April 15. Tho sudden death occurred to-day of Dr. John Laurence Rentoul, professor in tho Theological Hall at Ormond College, Melbourne University, ' and formerly moderator of the General Presbyterian Church of Australia. He collapsed and iiod in a city streat.
The Into Dr. Rentoul was born at Mount Pleasant, Garvagh, Ireland, on July 6, 1846, and was, therefore, in his 80th year. Ho was educated at Belfast, Dublin, and Leipzig. Ho took his B.A. degree in 1867 and liis M.A. in 1868. He was incumbont of St. George's Presbyterian Church, Southport, Lancashire, 1872-9, and of St. George's, St. Kilda, Melbourne, 1879-84. He had been professor of Now Testament, Greek Literature, and Christian Philosophy in the Theological Hall at Ormond College, Melbourne Universitv. since 1883; professor of Hebrew and Sacred Languages, 18838; and moderator of tho Presbyterian Church of Australia, 1912. Dr. Rentoul always took a prominent part in social and humanitarian movements. He was the author of soveral works, including "From Far Lands," "Poems of North and South,' "At the Sip of the Sword," "Off Vancouver's Well," and "Poems by South and North." His daughter, Miss Annie R. Rentoul, of Melbourne, has published poeins of high lyric quality, an'd another daughter, Mrs. Outhwaite, was a black and white artist.
