STREET TRAFFIC DOMES.
QUESTION OF LIGHTING.
CITY COUNCIL INVESTIGATION.
PRACTICAL TEST OF POSITIONS
The Auckland City Council is still investigating the advantages and otherwise of lighted and utilighted " domes" at street intersections as a means of regulating traffic. At the council's meeting last evening, the chief traffic inspector reported that ih company with the City engineer and the tramways anti electrical engineer he had visited the various intersections on Which it Was suggested that lighted traffic domes bo placed, similar to that in the vicinity of the Town Hall. It was agreed that lighted domes were essential at the intersection of Sytiionds Street. Mount Eden Road and New North Road, at the intersection of Symondfi Street and Khyber Pass Road, and that two domes be placed in a line with the footpath on each side at the intersection of Park Road, Khyber Pass Road and Mountain Road.
It was also agreed that the nnlighted dome at the junction of lV_'ie)l Road and Domain Drive should be ...rived to a point in the centre of Domain Drive and in line with the Parnell Rnad footpath. Domes Were heeded at the intersection of Pitt Street and Knrangahape Hoad and the intersection of Potisonby Road, Great North Road and Knrangahape Road. Subsequent to the inspection it was agreed that the intersections would b<> better served With internal-lighted domes than projector lights. On the night of inspection the Weather conditions were inelejnent. which afforded a more favourable opportunity of inspecting the various intersections. The Works Committee recommended that two domes, uhlighted, should be. placed iti the suggested position's at the intersection of Ithyher Pass and Mountain Roads atid that the dome at the intersection of Parnell Rnad mid Domain Drive should be moved, as proposed, with the object of ascertaining if the suggested positions were satisfactory, and that the other domes referred to in the chief traffic inspector's report, should be referred to the VlamWavs and electrical engineer for report, with an estimate of the cost of lighting them. The recommendation was adopted.
