The fact that America, the homo of jazz, was showing a tendency to go back to the old-time waltzes led people to purchase music of a higher standard, said a Christchurch music seller. "I am absolutely Convinced that the general tone of music in Christchurch is improving," he added

The manager of another music business said he found that jazz was not selling to the same extent as previously. Both iu regard to sheet music and gramophone records there was a growing demand for the better type of compositions, and this was especially noticeable in regard to gramophone music. He found that in selling a gramophone the buyer would take almost any kind of records when he took the machine. In a couple of months, however, there was a distinct change, the purchaser showing a great deal of discrimination in the class of record he desired. "Up till two years ago,'* he continued, ' we sold 75 per cent, of light stuff. Now the demand for a better class of record is much stronger and it will increase as gramophoi.>s and recording are improved." Music dealers are finding a much big. ger demand foi player pianos, which nave been greatly improved during tin, past year or two.
