NORTH SHORE WATER SUPPLY.
Sir, —We, in the northern suburbs, are surely living in a fool's paradise. Tho latest reports state that the lake supply is now about one foot above sea level, the lowest on record, and rapidly falling. We have four Borougli Councils, Water Boards, Lake Control Boards, Board of Health, etc., yet none of them separately or collectively have made any definite move to improve matters. True, they have made (occasionally) inquiries—the latest as to what the city would supply at. This information they had about nine months ago, yet nothing further was done, in the face of a diminishing supply and a trebled consumption. Drainage in Northcote and Takapuna, with Birkenhead to follow, will enormously increase the demand, and to put matters off aiiy further is very serious and almost criminal Why should not the. boroughs combine and arrange for the city to supply ? I feol sure if tliey wei'e approached reasonable conditions could be arranged for a "safe and steady supply. The North Shore boroughs are not competent to carry out schemes of their own. This is another instance of where amalgamation is necessary for success in any matter of importance. For years past "this water scare has existed, but the extreme lowness of the lake and the enormously increased consumption demand prompt action. I hope this matter will not be allowed to rest until we have some definite prospect of stable supply. Ax Anxious Resident.
