CAPTAIN HOBSON.
Sir. —By tho erection of an obelisk over tho grave of Captain Hobson, honour is tardily being paid to the greatest of our fiioneers. As the founder of our wonderul city, Aucklanders should have a peculiar pleasure in honouring his name, Though an obelisk will help to make more prominent the obscure spot where ho lies, it is not worthy of tho greatness of his work. A monument to his memory should be erected in some conspicuous place in the city he founded, not only as a mark of respect to him, but as an inspiration to the younger citizens of Auckland, especially now that, at last, the history of New Zealand is being taught in our schools. Such a monument could truly bear tha famous inscription, "Si Monumentum requiris, , circumspice"—if yon wish to see his greatest work, look around. Spenceley Walker.
