PEPYS AT THE PLAY.
Mr. Pepys would have been greatly pleased by the bestowal of his namo on a new ballad opera, for tho great diarist was one of the most assiduous playgoers on record. His love of the theatre, indeed, sometimes troubled his not oversensitive conscience, and he registered occasional vows "against wine and plays," which, however, he always forgot. The list of plays ho witnessed, as mentioned 111 the diary, is a remarkable one, ranging from Shakespeare to the most obscure rubbish of the Restoration stage, and his taste is open to some suspicion, since he thought "The Tempest" lacking in wit, "Macbeth" only "pretty good," and "Midsummer Night's Dream" tho "most insipid, ridiculous play I ever saw." Probably he saw only garbled versions of the plays.
