REFORM IN NEW YORK.

SYSTEM OF SOCIAL CENTRES. ATHLETIC MISSIONERS . ONLY. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. March 28. A unique attempt to reform the New York gangs will be made by the Marshall Stillman movement, an organisation which has done social work in the underworld for many years. Mr. Alpheus Gear, son of the founder of the movement, has announced that low "dens" will be replaced by social centres, at the head of which will be college men from Yale, Princeton and Harvard, who would be able to p'ay games and talk to members of the gangs in their qwn languages. Only strong, able-bodied collegians will be chosen. They must be adepts in the art of selfdefence and able to achieve respect and admiration through their athletic activities. Mr. Gear hopes, moreover, attractions offered by the social centres will induce youths who have been misled to join .with the college men in the new activities, which were designed to give healthy interests to those who lacked them. ' ■ ,' The centres will also extend aid to worthy ex-criminals who desire to return to lawful ways.
