MONKS TO SEEK WORK.
SOVIET'S LATEST EDICT. MONASTICISM ABOLISHED. Times. LONDON. March 28. The Riga correspondent of the Times says the self-styled "Holy Synod," of Moscow, which represents the Red branch of the Russian orthodox church, apparently acting under the instructions of the Soviet, has decided to abolish monasticism. The organisation asserts that the latter has. outlived its purpose and does not reflect modern ideas. Therefore, it decrees, monks must repudiate their vows and adopt useful means of livelihood. It is pointed out that since -1923 the monasteries have continued in an obscure fashion. They have kept within the law by organising as working communities. The Soviet seized the St. Izaaos Cathedral, in Leningrad, on the ground that some night rowdies had. stolen a number of the external bronze ornamentations. It is believed that agents of the Soviet despoiled the cathedral as a pretext for the seizure.
