INCIDENT AT NORTHCOTE.
HOUSEHOLDER ASSAULTED. A CHASE AND A CAPTURE. Some commotion was caused at Northcote yesterday afternoon, following an alleged assault and rcbbery at a private residence in Princes Street. It is stated that two men who had got into conversation with him, and claimed war service acquaintanceship, accompanied the resident to his home. A few minutes after reaching the house one of the visitors, without any provocation, it is alleged, struck the host with his fist, causing injury to the right eye and facial abrasions. Both men then are reported to have taken flight. A silver English lever watch and a large double gold albert chain, a family heirloom, valued at over £25, were missed from the sideboard in the room.
The owner gave chase. A man was captured by two residents, and subsequently handed over to the constable. He will appear at the Police Court this morning. The other man, it is stated, caught a ferry boat to Auckland, where he jumped from the steamer as one end touched the berth, and quickly escaped along the jetty and through the gate before the officials thefe realised the meaning of the command from the vessel's deck: "Stop him!" The assaulted man was attended by Dr. Dudding, but the injuries, though painful, were not of a serious character.
