FARES ON MAIL STEAMERS.
HIGHER RATES TO SYDNEY. Recently the Union Company increased the fares for passengers travelling between Auckland and Sydney on the Royal Mail liners. The Aorangi, which sailed from Auckland for Sydney last night, was the first steamer to book intercolonial passengers at the higher rate. Both mail liners and inter-colonial steamers carry three classes of passengers and in the past it was noticed that a large number of people booked by the linerj "n preference to the Maunganui and the Marama. In consequence, at times there was a considerable overcrowding on the Aorangi and Niagara in comparison to the other two steamers. "On the mail liners now inter-colonial passengers pay an extra £2 for first, £1 for second, and 10s for third-class- accommodation.
The Aorangi is to be followed from Auckland on Thursday by the Maunganui but as both passenger lists are less than usual it is not certain whether the higher rates on the Aorangi have made much difference in her bookings. The Aorangi's list of passengers was about 100 less than the number of passengers carried by the Niagara, which left Auckland for Sydney 'on March 2. On that occasion the steerage passengers totalled 31 and yesterday the Aorangi had 38 from Auckland.
A considerable number of passengers will be added to the Maunganui's list before she sails on Thursday and it will be seen more plainly then whether the increase in fares has made any difference to travellers.
