MOTHER'S HEAVY BURDEN.
FINANCIAL HELP SOUGHT.
WIDOW WITH THREE BABIES. [BY TET/EQBAPH. —OWN COBRESPONDSNT.] HAMILTON. Thursday. An application for a compassionate allowance was made to the Borough Council last evening. The applicant said she had three babies under the age of three years, and it was useless endeavouring to get work with them on her hands. The widow's pension of £2 a week was quite inadequate for her needs. Mr. C. J. W. Barton remarked that the ease was a most deserving one, but unfortunately if the department became aware the widow was receiving assistance it would curtail her pension. The widow's late husband was described by Mr. J. Denz as one of the war's heroes, suffering from consumption. He had endeavoured to earn a living for his wife and family when quite unfit for the class of work he was engaged upon, sewerage construction. The speaker had learned that a glass of brandy a day was all that kept him going, yet he was one of the best workmen the council ever had. "Of course, anything we do would be merely in the nature of a compassionate allowance," said the Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, in moving that the matter be referred to the engineer for a report. The motion was carried.
