FRENCH ABBE FLOGGED.

WOMEN BEFORE COURT.

GLORY IN THEIR ACTION. WEIRD TALES OF WITCHCRAFT. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received 7.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. PARIS, Jan. 25. The trial of 10 women members of the Bordeaux Order " Our Lady of Tears," on a charge of flogging Abbe Desmoyes at the village of Bombon suggests a reversion to the middle ages rather -than a civilised court in 1926. All the accused glory in their deed. They declare that the abbe is .the embodiment of Satan and the most formidable wizard of modern times, and that he cast an evil spell over a large number of people in Bordeaux. M. Loudin, a farmer, stated in evidence that the abbe's enchantments, were carried out by means of sparrows and canaries, which circled over the houses •of his victims. As the abbe had sold his soul to Satan, the devil had to be driven out by a flogging. A grocer, who was anotlfer witness, said a knotted cord was used to discipline the abbe. It was the same instrument with which he thrashed himself.

The accused women were all dressed in black and heavily veiled. When they left the Court they were followed by a ribald crowd of people, who sang parodies on mystic incantations.
