GERMAN IMMIGRANTS.
SUITABILITY OF AUSTRALIA. ADVOCATE STATES REASONS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 24. Mr. D. G. Somerville, formerly M.P. for Barrow-in-Furness, who spoke at the Ladies' Imperial Club on Thursday on the subject of Germans as colonists with special reference to Australia, has sent to tho press an explanation of his remarks. Ho says he only advocated tho admission of German .immigrants to Australia as part of his argument that more white people must be settled there. He admits he is anxious regarding the danger of a coloured invasion of Australia. German immigrants would, he says, also act as a safety-valve. The congested population of Central Lurope was aggravated by the fact the Germany now possessed no colonies.
Mr. Somerville, in the remarks referred to in the message said that Germans in Australia were well-ordered citizens. He contended that some regions of Australia would never he peopled with white labour Although he would be mobbed if he said it in Australia, he was strongly of opinion that the only solution of Australia's problem was indentured coloured labour.
