ADVENTURER IMPRISONED.
TROUBLE OVER A CHEQUE.
BOGUS REVUE COMPANY SCHEME,
Described by the police as an adventurer, John Henry Irvine, aged 23 (Mr. Hart) , admitted obtaining' a typewriter, valued at £25, from Alpe Brothers and Company, by means of a valueless cheque when charged in the Police Court yesterday. 'Thin man recently arrived from Wellington, where he inaugurated a scheme to place a revue company on the road," said Senior-Detective Hammond, "fie got a number of people to join the concern, which he called Joys Unlimited. Ho was .the sole, director and supervisor and obtained money from various people until he came under the notice of the police. He had advertised for artists, some of whom were under 16 years of age. However, no criminal charge was formulated against him. "After disbanding the company, Irvine came to Auckland, took an office in. the city arid secured a typewriter, which he no doubt regarded as a' most necessary adjunct to his business," continued Mr. Hammond. "The man has already had three years' reformative detention, which apparently has not done him any good. No doubt'he is a man who "wants a little correction. The scheme in Wellington ■was quite an ingenious one. He promoted a bogus company by which he defrauded people." Air. Hart said although accused had obtained the typewriter by means of a valueless cheque, he became conscience stiicken next day and wrote to the firm telling them the cheque was a bad one. He made an attempt to repent, but unfortunately it was too late. Tho magistrate, Mr. Poynton, imposed o sentenco of three months' imprisonment.
