ZANE GREY'S FISHING.

EVERYTHING NOW READY. CAMPING ON AN ISLAND. ENTERPRISING BOY'S COUP. PHOTOGRAPH AT PICTURES. [BV TELEGRAPH.—OWN COHRESPONDENT. ] RUSSELL, Monday. All is now in readiness for Mr. Zane Grey's fishing expedition and at any time the outside world may expect to hear something of his exploits among the swordfish. All the preliminary arrangements have been completed. Mr. Grey and party,' after arriving in Russell, thought they would like to camp on one of the islands nearer the deep-sea fishing. Mr. C. F. Baker, senr., gave them permission to erect their camp on his beautiful island, Oropukupuku, and Mr. Grey decided to camp in the homestead bay called Otehei. The. launchman went down with Mr. Grey and Captain Mitchell, his private secretary, and erected the camp yesterday. They hope to make a start with fishing immediately. Asked what he thought of the Bay of Islands, Mr. Grey said. "It is a beautiful place. I like it very much and hope to get some wonderful fishing." The party has two launches engaged. The members will fish out of both and have a 1 cinema camera in each. One of the launches is especially equipped with a camera to take special pictures, and when the fishing expedition is completed it will form the last part of Mr. Grey's " Fishing of the Seven Seas." This film is expected to be one of the finest fishing pictures ever shown.

Mr. Zane Grey has decided to fish in tho Alma G., with Mr. Francis Arlidge as skipper and Mr. Bert Williams, of whaling fame, as expert. Captain Mitchell will fish in the Marlin, with Mr. Leon Warne ss skipper, and the expert to be chosen later.

Mr, C. Alma Baker is also camping on Mr. C. F. Baker's island and is in the same bay as Mr. Zane Grey. He has the launch Reliance, with Mr. Stan. Adamson as skipper and Mr. Syd. Irving as expert.

Mr. Grey, Mr. Baker and their party attended the pictures ill the Russell Hall on Saturday evening. Mr, Grey is keenly interested-in moving-pictures and both he and Mr. Baker received a surprise. It happened that they were sitting together on the Russell.strand, at about four o'clock in the aitcrnoon when a small boy took a snapshot of them. The lad ran home and persuaded his mother to help him to 'fix up the photo. He went down to the hall and asked the manager if he would screen it, and to' the surprise of Mr. Grey and Mr. Baker "they '"saw their own pictures on the screen. All the children in the hall, gave a loud cheer. Neither the boy nor the management had any idea that Mr. Grey was to attend the pictures.

THRILLING FISHING INCIDENT. {ME,. GREY'S WONDERFUL EYESIGHT It is related-that Mr. Zane Grey was being driven through the streets of Wellington on the morning of his arrival when he suddenly told the driver to pull up, "I told those press boys I would meet them at my hotel at 10 o'clock, and its two minutes over time," he said, "let us get right back." There was much to do that morning, but, Mr. Grey would not keep tho press waiting, and a companion records that the pressmen described him. just as he is, an eager, thoroughly likeable personality, without the least suspicion of "side" or affectation.

"This is certainly a country . I would like to live in," Mr. Grey remarked, as he gazed, out over the panorama of hills surrounding the city. His eyes lingered awhile on the forested ranges looming against the eastern sky, all his sporting instincts aroused by the statement that deer, wild boar and goats roamed • freely in their fastnesses. The hunter in him is expressed in the keen glance from halfclosed lids born of his long sojourning in the wilderness which he loves so well.

' ''His sight is wonderful," said Captain Mitchell, the enthusiastic British sportsman who accompanies him on , his expeditions.' . "He can see things away down under water long before anyone else! I had hooked a broad-billed Swordfish, Xiphias; Gladius, off the Californian coast one day, and was playing my; fish, when suddenly. Grey,. who was aboard a companion boat and peering deep into tho water, shouted, 'look out, cap.! He's coming straight up. at you!' I sprang to my feet in an endeavour to see something of m'y antagonist,, and next instant his sword was driven clean through the bottom of the boat uid transfixed the thwart I had been-sitting on. It was a close ghave. We consider the broad-bill as the most dangerous fighter of them all."' Mr, Grey is' keenly interested in New Zealand, and," besides the book on deepsea sport which lie intends writing, expects to obtain good material, for a story. This, with the cmema pictures being taken of his' fishing exploits and tour of the Dominion, should prove great publicity in the United; States, from which country he considers an increasing army of American sportsmen will com o to visit New Zealand in the near future.
