CHAMPION ATHLETES.
INTENTIONS OF R. A. ROSE. REPLY RECEIVED FROM NURMI.' [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTERTON, Friday. A meeting between R. A. Rose, the Australian and New' Zealand champion distance runner, and Paavo Nurmi, the famous Finnish athlete, is unlikely to eventuate for another year, if at all. Nurmi has replied to representations made on behalf of Rose as follows: "I have received your letter and in reply would say that it is not clear when the race is to take place. I can hardly undertake a journey in the near future, but could perhaps do so next autumn, although I cannot definitely promise this." Owing to operations on his farm interfering with his preparation, Rose had decided not to compete against Hahn at Masterton on February 6, but has since acceded to pressure from local atlijetic officials and has given the assurance that he will compete. When Rose and Hahn meet for fho first time, naturally the former cannot be at the top of his form as ho had anticipated reserving himself for tho return visit of the Americans to Masterton in March.
