BEAUTY HINTS.
A spell of real summer weather such as wo are now experiencing works havoc with the complexion of the girl who lias a fine, thin skin that tans and freckles easily. Summer tan, wh6n of the pretty brown shade, is often rather becoming provided it is not 'allowed to become too dark, but the red form of sun and wind burn, the kind that those with fine skins always suffer from, is unbecoming and painful. If your skin is of this typo take precautions to prevent the rays of the sun from catching you unprepared. Don't keep out of the sunshine, for sunshine is most health-giving, but prepare your skin to resist its rays. Procure a little pure olive oil and after cleansing the faco and neck in the morning, rub the oil well into the skin. Leave it on for five minutes, then, with a piece of medicated cottonwool, wipe over the face and throat. Now apply the powder puff, dusting the powder on rather thickly. Leave again for a few minutes and with another piece of cottonwool or, better still, a hare's foot, remove all superfluous powder, leaving just a light dusting over the skin. The oil will not give the skin a greasy appearance—it is absorbed by the pores and only the lightest coating remains—but that coating forms a protection from the rays of the sun which will prevent red sunburn and freckles. To prevent freckles from forming and to help banish any which may have formed, bathe the face in the following lotion instead of using soap and water. Wash a handful of pearl barley, then place it in half a gollon of water with trio rind of a lemon. Boil for ten minutes, then strain off the liquid and use for washing the faco and throat. With the fashion for sleevelesi: frocks in the day time the problem of how to prevent the arms from becoming sunburnt is even greater than guarding the face and throat. The oil treatment recommended for the face and throat should be given to the arms before the liquid powder which most women use on the arms is applied. This will form a protection which should last right throughout the day. Elderflowcr water, to which simple tincture of benzoin has been added in tbo proportion of fifteen drops to the ounce, is very beneficial in removing tan.
