WEIRD SMOKE EFFECTS.

VICTORIAN BUSH FIRES. COLOURED HAZE IN MELBOURNE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. Tho City of Melbourne is enveloped in a dense haze as the result of bush fires, which have been raging in the Tynong, Garfield and Berrick districts, in Gippsland. The fires broke out on Thursday and extended to a point within 34 miles of Melbourne. At one time Tynong was in danger of being enveloped. A weird effect has been caused by the fires in the city, the smoke being blown right across the face of the sun. The haze presented a deep orange colour. The smoke was so thick that it threw unlighted places into a deep shadow, and heavy damage has been caused.
