BIG FIRE IN HONGKONG.

LARGE HOTEL DESTROYED. GUESTS' HURRIED ESCAPE. Reutor. HONGKONG, Jan. 1. The biggest fire that has occurred here for years gutted the nine-storey Hongkong Hotel, which was crowded with guests who retired in the small hours of this morning after a New Year's Eve dance. The fire started at 9 o'clock this morning, nnd many guests were still in bed. They escaped hurriedly in such clothes as were available. The fire brigades, assisted by 250 soldiers of the East Surrey Regiment and Royal Navy units from H.M.S. Strenuous, made great efforts to save the hotel, but by noon the roof had fallen in and the building was doomed. The streets in the vicinity of the fire are littered with hotel furniture and guests' belongings. Considerable quantities were saved. The damage was very heavy. It is at present impossible to estimate the extent.. Thomas Cook and Son's offices are among the premises that are damaged,. Prince George, son of King George V., was among the naval officers who lataded in charge of parties from the Strenuous. The fire was got under control later in the day. The origin is unknown.
