THE DEMAND FOR BOOKS.
MOST POPULAR AUTHORS. HYMN BOOKS AND BIBLES. . Discussing books, fiction mainly, a leading bookseller in Hawera said ho considered people generally did not read so much nowadays as they did some years ago. But, lie said, of the writers whose books had come on tho market lately he found two of the most sought after were Sabatini .and Galsworthy. It was, however, difficult to judge tho public taste in books. A bock had a vogue and was in keen demand, but, the next by the same author might prove a failure, and the extra copies ordered on the strength of the previous book would bo left on the retailers' hands and might eventually almost have to be given away. A different aspect of the literature stocked by booksellers was remarked on by another business man. He pointed to a case containing some scores, probably 200 copies', of hymn books, Bibles and prayer books. There was, he said, a strong and ever steady demand for these books. Evidently all people were not heathens or bound up in things of this world to the exclusion of tho serious side of life.
