PORT OF DUNEDIN.
STEADY GROWTH IN TRADE. IMPROVEMENTS TO HARBOUR. [BY TELEORAI'H.—own correspondent.] DUNEDIN. Sunday. The trade of the port showed marked activity in 1924, when the arrivals and departures for that year totalled 595, with an aggregate tonnage of 1,098,982. This "was the biggest aggregate tonnage for any year, constituting a record for the port. The total number of arrivals and departures for tho 12 months ended on Thursday was 575, and the aggregate gross tonnage 1,048,020. Since 1920 the shipping trade of the port has shown a steady improvement both as regards tho number of vessels and tho tonnage. The imports for 1925 totalled 338,841 tons, comprising 143,924 from overseas and 194,917 of inter-colonial' and coastal cargo. Tho imports during the year 1925 exceeded tho 1924 total by over 10,000 tons, and constitute a record for the port. The exports for 1925 total 125,416 tons, comprising 87,733 tons to overseas ports, and 37,683 tons to intercolonial and coastal ports. The grand total, imports and ex* ports, for the past year was 464,1257 tons, tho previous highest being in 1924, when the grand total was 452,982 tons. Tho Harbour Board has shown a forward policy during the past year. Improvements have been made as regards tho construction of new cargo sheds. A new uection of tho Rattray Street Wharf has been completed, giving three deep water berths at this wharf. Improvements havo been also made in the depth of the Victoria channel and no vessels have experienced any difficulty in working the port. Tho board intends to carry out several oxtensivo works during the coming year. Theso will include the extension of tho Victoria Wharf and the re-erection cf the molo at the- Spit.
