CHRISTMAS TELEGRAMS.

Sir, —I was pleased to suo that in vour issue of 30th inst. a letter signed " Fair Play " drew attention to the hardships inflicted on young mcsseugers in tho delivery of "greeting" telegraph messages. At about 10 p.m. oft the 24tli 1 was surprised to have a message delivered at my residence, and still further suprisc-d when at midnight, or a few minutes before, another message was delivered. On Christmas Day about noon I saw a telegraph messenger, who, on my asking him, told me that he had still 200 messages to deliver and it would take him the best part of tho day to do so. Wo all can sympathise with the post and telegraphic authorities in their endeavour to increase revenue, but I consider in this instance it is being obtained at too great a cost. Tho messengers weru, of course, not tho only persons affected, as the telegraph operators must have been kept to very Sato hours also. The general public is, as a whole, inconsiderate and leave things to the last minute, and do not consider the convenience of others. In view of iho hardships involved to the telegraph office's staff I think that the authorities should " out out " the " greetings " messages or refuse to receive them within say two days of Christmas, I have nothing whatever to do with tho department, but tho tremendous pressure of work on the niRS-_ senger boys gave me a great deal of concern. v Dbvonpori? Resident,
