KAIHERE POST OFFICE.

QUESTION OF THE SITE. NOISY MEETING OF SETTLERS. [BY TELEGRAPH.--OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 THAMES. Wednesday. The Kaihere post office was destroyed by fire last April and ever since tho question of where the new office should bo built has been freely argued and, according to report, has entirely overshadowed other matters in tho district. Tho explanation lies in tho fact that the district is divided into two factions, one urging rebuilding on tho old site and the other being strong for a new site on the Ngarua Road. Tho two situations are a mile apart and separated by an unbridled creek.

Two petitions were prepared and presented to the Postal Department. A meeting in the Kaihau Hall on Monday evening was attended by Mr. R. H. Boyd, chief postmaster, Hamilton, to hear the claims of the rival sections. Mr. Wallace presided, and tho gathering, one of tho largest ever held in tho district, was distinctly lively. At the conclusion, when some' semblance of order had been restored, and an investigation had disclosed who should have the right to vote, a ballot was taken and resulted in favour of tho old site by 43 votes to 31. The final' decision rests with the department.
