COMPARISON WITH AUSTRALIA. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRIST CHURCH, Wednesday. In an to-day Mr. J. Barnes, President of the New South Wales Trotting Association, who has_ attended a number of trotting meetings in New Zealand, gave some of his impressions on the sport in this country. " The trotting people of New Zealand." he said, " were as generous to me as people could possibly be. I have seen the best trotting horse 3 here that I have ever come across and I count it good fortune to ha/e seen them in action." As far as the general conduct and s.d ministration of trotting in New Zealand went Mr. Barnes did not think they could be improved upon. In New South Wales they had much to learn in this direction. There the circumstances were very different and they could not work in all the advantages which the Dominion had. He hoped he had in the course of his holiday picked up seme few things that would be beneficial to trotting people in Sydney. It was the general management of the meetings which particularly struck him and also the way in which members and membere' wives were catered for. Things were quite the reverse in New South Wales where no ladies attended trottinsr luncheons except at one club. At all the rest luncheons were far the men alone. " Trotting is much better patromsea here than in New South Wales." went on Mr. Barnes. " and you get a better and more general class of people here. It is essentially a tradesmen's sport in our country. It is only the farmers, the butcher, baker, and milkman who pay much attention t to the sport and go in for breeding trotting horses. The class of your horses is in every way beyond the class of ours. The best of our horses find their way to New Zealand after the big prize money. At home onr average prise-money is £IOO. We often run divisions when the money gets up to £l3O. but when you have to divide that three ways, as we sometimes do, it does not leave much. " Two of the best horses I have seen are Great Bingen and Onyx. In my opinion if you brought the best of the American horses here to race against those two on their own ground the New Zealand horses would have a big chance of winning, because they are so clean gaited and the best behaved horses I ever met. Their as well as their manners are perfect. They are horses of which every New Zealand sporting man should be proud."
