WOMEN IN FACTORIES.
PRESERVING WORKS HANDS. NOT UNDER PRESENT AWARD. An interpretation was given by the Arbitration Court yesterday of the award in the freezing and related trades as regards the position of female workers in the preserving department whether they should be paid at the rate of 2s an hour, as coming under the heading, "all other orkers not specified," or whether they are exempt Horn the provisions of the award. The Court ruled that the work done by females in the tag-room and the preserving department is not the work specifically covered by the award, but is rather auxiliary to it. Their duties are eonfined to the finishing of the canning operations. The nature of their work is, in the opinion of the Court, an indication that the award was not intended to apply to it. Their wages and conditions of employment may accordingly be the subject, of a separate award, or, i? the parties prefer, of a supplementary award.
