OVERCROWDED SCHOLARS.
THE MEADOWBANK SCHOOL. SERIOUS POSITION DISCLOSED. The overcrowded condition of the Meadowbank school was emphasised by a deputation from the School Committee which waited on the Auckland Education Board yesterday. Mr. J. B. Patcrson, chairman of the committee, said the district was growing very rapidly. About 100 houses had been built during the past year, and more were being erected. the school had been built to accommodate about 300 pupils and there were now 394 on the roll. In the infant department the accommodation was shocking. In one room there were, 80 children with two teachers. Temporary relief was urgently required. A hall could be obtained in Remuera Rjead, but it was about a mile-away. The provision of permanent- accommodation was hindered by the lack of level ground. An exorbitant price was being asked for an adjoining section, but the committee and the residents were doing their best to raise the sum required above the department's grant. Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the board, said every thing possible would be done to assist the committee. The best solution of the difficulty for the present- would be the erection of a portable building. It was decided to ask the department to provide such a building. A letter was received from the department stating that further consideration would be given to the application for a grant for a separate infant department when the question of-the additional area for the site had been settled.
