CRIME IN NEW ZEALAND.
STATISTICAL REVIEW FOR 1924 A slightly larger number of convicted persons were received into New Zealand prisons in 1924 than in 1923, the total being 2405 as against 2358, including Maoris. At the end of the year, 1190 males and 57 females remained in confinement, the daily averages having been respectively 1127 and 69. The statistics indicate that crime among the New Zealand-born is less than among the rest of the population of New Zealand. Of 8.149 persons convicted in Magistrate's Courts after arrest, 4023 or 49 per cent, were New Zealand born, including Maoris, whereas at the census of 192 i 59 per cent, of the population represented New Zealand-born males at ages 20 and over. A slightly higher proportion, 53 per cent., was formed by New Zealand-born male prisoners in confinement in 1924. Statistics of drunkenness also show a relatively lower proportion of arrests among the New Zealand-born population than among persons who have come, from abroad.
