DOMINION ARTIST DEAD.
MR. WILLIAM GREENE. NOTABLE PAINTER OF ANIMALS. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN' CORRESPONDENT. ] CHEISTCHTJRCH. Wednesday. The death is announced of a well-known Christchurch artist, Mr. William Greene. Mr. Greene's work is highly esteemed in the Dominion and there are examples in the Christchurch Art Gallery and other galleries in New Zealand. He specialised in animal paintings, and was most successful in depicting the strenuous side, his work showing horses engaged in hard toil in the shingle pit, river bed or harvest field. He had a happy gift in representing muscular action. The artist spent his youth in Dunedin and later went to Timaru. where he painted and taught for some time. About five years ago he came to Christchurch and took tip a position of art instructor at the Training College. He had many warm friends among the artist community of Christchurch. Some years ago he visited the Continent. His death was somewhat unexpected.
