EDUCATION OFFICER.

MR. SPENCER'S RETIREMENT. AUCKLAND BOARD'S TRIBUTE. A warm tribute to the work of Mr. W. E. Spencer, officer in charge of educational buildings, who is to retire early next year, was paid by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, yesterday. Mr. Spencer had a thorough grasp of his, work, and a wonderful knowledge of the Auckland Province, said Mr. Burns. He was going out with the good feeling of the board, which could only hope that his successor would treat it as fairly and squarely Mr. E. C. Purdie, on behalf of the office staff, thanked Mr. Spencer for the help and guidance he had given. Mr. Spencer said that Auckland had long presented a problem, but it had received no iikie favoured treatment than any othtr district. It did not seem so long since he had gone to the top of Mount Eden and One Tree Hill to spy out school sites in what were now denselysettled districts. Ho was afraid that his successor was going to be in for a "rough time," but he could wish nothing better for him than that he should meet with the same cordiality as himself.
