CLERGY IN AMERICA.
PROFESSOR'S CRITICISM. FEWER STUDENTS FOR CHURCH NEW YORK, Dec. 5. Every year the number of students who take the theological course at American universities grows smaller. Professor Nicholas Butler, president of the Columbia University, deplores the decrease in the number of theological students. He attributes it to the widespread intolerance in religious mitters. Professor Butler also blames the pathetic character of recant theological disputes among the various denominations. He considers that the Protestant clergy in America are becoming illiterate.
