"THESE PACIFIC ISLANDS."
STORY OF A LONDON LADY. NEW ZEALAND AND JAMAICA. In an address given in Christchurch last week the Hon. W. Pember Reeves related a story of an evening when he was a guest at a dinner party in London. The amiable and highly educated hostess said to him: "Mr. Reeves, I'm going to ask you to take in this lady, as she comes from your country and you will feel very much more at home." " The lady in question turned out to be a Creole from the Island of Jamaica," said Mr. Reeves, to the accompaniment of hearty laughter. " However, she was so attractive that I was willing to sit beside her under any pretext," he continued, amidst renewed laughter. " When I explained to ray hostess later that Jamaica was separated from New Zealand by the large continent of America, she declared. ' You must excuse me, but I do mix up these Pacific Islands.' " Once again the audience enjoyed Mr. Reeves' explanation of how some people at Home regard NewZealand and its position on the map.
