TWO VALUELESS CHEQUES.
LAPSE OF A MILKMAN. Two charges of false pretences were admitted in the Police Court yesterday by a married man whose name was ordered to be suppressed. Messrs. A. Rooser and S. J. Marks, J.P.'s, were on the Bench. Chief-I>etective Cummings said accused had an account with a bank about a year ago. On August 22 last, when his account was not in credit, he drew a valueless cheque for 15s and obtained groceries to the value of 4s and lis change from the store of Mr. F. McGregor. On November 21 he obtained £1 from Joseph Benfield by means of another valueless cheque. Accused was a milkman and had four children. He had never been before the Court before and his general character previously had been good. The Bench considered the offence was a very serious one, but in view of the circumstances and the good character previously borne by accused, the Court felt disposed to give him a chance. He was ordered to come tip for sentence if called upon within 12 months.
