DR. WEST-WATSON'S CAREER. A DISTINGUISHED CHURCHMAN. Tho Right Rev. Campbell West-Watson, 11.A., D.D., who has accepted the See of Christchurch, is a distinguished and well-known churchman, as well as a brilliant scholar. • .. , That he was called to be SuffraganBishop of Barrow-in-Furness at /the age of '3l—at tho minimum age limit for a bishop, whb "shall bo fully 30 years of age',' - "is 8n indication., that he had already made his mark among the English clergy. ' At the time of "his appointment he was Dean of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, to which he was appointed at the. age of • 28. v He had been a Fellow and Lecturer of the college since 1905. In 1909, in order to give Dr. Diggle assistance in the working of the large diocese, hp accepted appointment as his Suffragan, being allotted a territorial title, in accordance with Catholic custom, as . Bishop of Barrow-in-Furness, although there is, no actual diocese.-.
The theological standpoint of the new feishop is described after tho English, custom of attaching, labels to people ac-" cording their approximation to a school of thought, as "Liberal Evangelical." ..The Commissary has received -a, cable .jfr'om the bishop stating "that he hoped to ileave England on February 12," and as' ; it, is understood that he will be coming via Panama, ho is expected to roach 'Christchurch toward the end of March. The new bishop's father was born in Glasgow of an old family of Glasgow merchants, wlio were Lanarkshire folk,. originally from Calder. His mother was a Campbell, of a branch of that family, whose ancestors migrated to Ireland in 1745. Her father was Dr. Theophilus Campbell, Dean of Dromore, in North Ireland. Mrs. West-Watson was Miss Emily Monsarrat, daughter of the Rev. Henry Monsarrat, late Vicar of St. ( Thomas', Kendal. She comes of a family originally Spanish, later settled in Southern France and since the • Edict of Nantes, in Ireland. The new bishop's family consists of two sons and three daughters. _______
