OBITUARY.

BISHOP J. S. VAUGHAN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 1.5 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 7. The death has occurred of the Right Rev. John Stephen Vaughan, Bishop of Sebastapolis, and Auxiliary to the Bishop of Sal ford, aged 72. Dr. Vaughan had been Bishop of Sebastapolis since 1909 and Domestic; Prolate to the Papal Court since 1896, Ho was rector of St. Bcde's College, Manchester, from 1912 to 1915. Born at Coijrtfield, Ross, in January, 1853 he was educated iit St. Gregory's College, Downside, Bath, at Monte Cassino, Italy, at the English College in Rome, and at Grand Semiuaire, Bruges. Ho became a priest in .1876 and was far a time professor of mathematics at St. Bede s College. 110 travelled in Australia for three years, preaching, lecturing and doing missionary work. On his return to England he settled in London whero ho undertook parochial work, first under Cardinal Manning and then under his brother, Cardinal Vaughan. He was Canon of Westminster in 1898 and resided in Rome from 1904-7. Ho then went to the United States and Canada on a preaching and lecturing four. In 1900 he was appointed Bishop of Manchester. Ho had publishod numerous religious works.
