MANUKA DELAYED.
BEH AVi OUR OF FIREMEN. INSTANCE OF JOB CONTROL. A. nnd N.Z. MELBOURNE. Dec. 7. The departure of the Manuka for the Bluff yesterday was delayed by one of the most glaring instances of job control which has occurred for many months. When the vessel's sailing time arrived 16 firemen were missing. Later all but one of them returned. . When it. was suggested that another man should be signed on in place of the absentee, one of the latter s friends said he would leave the ship if that were done. An official of the company and one of the crow had tc engage a taxi-cab and search for the missing fireman. They eventually located him and persuaded him to return to the ship. In the meantime other firemen had gone ashore and they had again to he collected from the waterfront hotels before the vessel could sail.
