DESTRUCTIVE PEAT FIRE.

HAURAKI PLAINS DANGER. A LARGE AREA COVERED. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Monday. The peat fire on the Hauraki Plains is still raging fiercely, and many propertyowners are becoming anxious. The Lands and Drainage Department has had several drains blocked to try and confine the fire, and patrols are being constantly maintained to extinguish any fire that may jump across the flooded drains. Owners of stands of flax are also taking precautions, and, in addition to the flooding of drains, arc burning the peat near the drain banks. The fire now covers a large area, and it spreads rapidly, according to the direction of the wind, which during the past few days has been strong and changeable.
