RACE FROCKING.

TAILORED ENSEMBLE SUITS.

Rain, and even showers nf hail, which fell intermittently in the <,arly morning, were not a happy augury for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring [Meeting, which opened at Ellerslie on Saturday.. However, the day brightened as the morning wore on, and by 11 o'clock the sun was gaily thining and a few brave souls donned spring-like garments. But theie was a keen, eokl wind blowing, and the more cautious were glad of their fur coats arid wraps with which they seldom parted company throughout the day. Thus, from a sartorial point of view, the day was disappointing, and there was little from which to gage the trend of summer fashions. The ensemble suits, a long, tailored coat and frock of lighter material, toning in shade, were much in evidence. Guiltless of trimming and retaining the sleek, slim silhouette, they were exceedingly smart, and seemed to have quite ousted the tailored coat and skirt. All shades of brown-rust and cedar, cinnamon and bronze, were universal favourites, but blue bids fair to become a significant rival. And a very becoming one it is in the new shades that verge round cornfiower and delphinium. Cyclamen also called for acknowledgment, but it is a . colour becoming to few, and is therefore chosen guardedly by both blondes and brunettes. Hvts were yet again of the cloche Variety, smaller if anything to fit snugly °P. singled heads. Crocodile or snake skin shoes accompanied all the new toilets, tod p k' n 8 s ei ' e in all shades of pink
