BOARDING HOUSE BURNED.
GIG EILAZE AT PAEROA. MAN INJURED BY JUMPING. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PAEROA. Friday. Fire occurred at four o'clock this morning in a two-storey building occupied as a boarding house by Mr. and Mrs. Gillard. The outbreak had a firm hold in the rear portion before it was noticed. The Paeroa brigado responded quickly to the alarm, but there was no hope of saving the building, and they directed their attentions to the neighbouring buildings, which with difficulty they managed to save. Fortunately there wore only six boarders in the premises at the time, five of whom escaped in their night attire. For some time anxiety was felt for the safety of the other lodger, as no sign of him could be found. It transpired later that ho had not returned from a dance. One boarder, Mr. Geary, suffered a fracture of the leg, the result of jumping from 0110 of the top windows after finding his means of exit cut off. The building, which was owned by Mr. John Kennedy, was insured in the State Fire Office for £4OO. A stable adjoining the building was also totally destroyed. It was covered by insurance to the extent (»f £SO. Mrs. Gillard's furniture and effects were insured for £505 with the Victoria Company.
