ACQUITTAL OF PEER.
LORD TORRINGTON'S CASE. EXPLANATION OF CHEQUE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 8.35 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 22. Lord Torrington has been found not guilty on a charge of passing a valueless cheque. He staled in evidence that lie believed the cheque would be mef. by a lady friend paying in his allowance. The prosecution alleged that 1 Aird Torrington presented a cheque _ for £lO, written on notepaper, upon a Nottingham bnnk, to Oliver, a chemist, at West Mailing, Kent. Oliver, although suspecting the cheque's validity, advanced £5. The bank dishonoured the cheque because Lord Torrington's monthly allowance of £25 had been stopped. Torrington did not reply to Oliver's request for an explanation* but anonymously sent a moneyorder for £5 after proceedings had been instituted.
